cgs unit

I've been used to SI unit since I start learning physics. Now almost all the textbooks and lectures are using cgs unit. It's really a pain. Symbolic calculation are fine, but when it comes to numbers, I never get it right. I still haven't really plug numbers into the fine structure constant and get it right even once. Why are there two sets of units in the first place....
